Senate bill targets Western power agency probed by Republic; Flake, McCain seek more transparency

New legislation co-sponsored by Arizona Sens. Jeff Flake and John McCain would require the controversial Western Area Power Administration to publish its electrical rates and budget information online to ensure transparency. The agency, known as the WAPA, provides electrical power in 15 states, serving nearly 40 million people. It sells wholesale energy generated by 57 hydroelectric plants and Arizona's coal-fired Navajo Generating Station. The administration maintains 17,000 miles of high-voltage lines and 328 substations.

Report highlights the need to overhaul U.S. tax system

PRESIDENT Trump and Congress are working on tax reform proposals. The politics of a major tax overhaul may be complicated, but the need for change is undeniable, as a recent report from Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., makes clear. Flake's “Tax Rackets” report highlights several tax breaks the senator considers to be of dubious merit. But the report also shows how such tax breaks distort the whole system.

Flake seeks more funding for Veterans Court Outreach specialists

PHOENIX — A specialized court helping veterans get their lives back may soon get a little boost. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake will ask for more funding for Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) specialists. These people work with Veterans Treatment Courts nationwide – and in Arizona – to help tailor programs for struggling veterans.
